M-tech Thesis : " A Study of Satellite Image Using PSO and FCM techniques"

Abstract:
Recent advances in geo-science and remote sensing technology leads to a collection of huge
amount of satellite images without having ground truth information. Therefore in order to
extract meaningful information from satellite images there is a need of image clustering. Kmeans
is basic algorithm for clustering proposed by MacQueen in 1967, since last four decades
many clustering techniques were proposed. This research work presents a detailed survey of
clustering techniques and algorithms available in literature and some experiments are carried
out using standard and satellite image datasets.
Normally image datasets comes with noise and shadow which may results incorrect analysis
of data, to overcome this a novel approach of fuzzy image clustering are proposed where
satellite image is first segmented based on histogram threshold optimization using Particle
Swarm Optimization (PSO) and then segmented objects are clustered using Fuzzy C-means
(FCM). Experiments are repeated for three threshold levels and fitness value of PSO, CPU
execution time is calculated for each threshold level. Objective function value of datasets using
FCM and using proposed approach is measured and compared. Our analysis shows that
segmentation before clustering using proposed method minimize objective function compared to FCM.
